A Few Words From Our Pastor…….

My dear Parishioners, Sisters and Brothers,

The time of the pandemic has become a magnifying glass for all that is weakened in us, in our relationships, at work and in society. Widespread fatigue, irritation, accumulated aggression breaking out by chance, irrational conspiracy theories. As a result, a general distrust of the world around us, the media, politics and the Church. And the temptation to blame everyone around you. If we don't say "stop," we will go downhill into bitterness, helplessness and depression. We cannot always change the reality around us, but we can change our hearts and our thinking to find the right answer to what happens to us.

Nicodemus is at a turning point in his life. He hears about Jesus and what he hears turns over his whole world, all that he has dedicated himself to.

Nicodemus then starts with himself. He comes to Jesus to talk, ask and seek. He comes at night. A night for pious Jews is a study time, as some interpret it. But the night in John’s Gospel is also a time of struggle,

betrayal of Judas and Peter, a time of trial and death. In his night, Nicodemus hears words that he does not understand at that moment: about the need to be born again and about God who loved the world by sending His Son. It seems that he understood them thanks to Jesus' death and His resurrection.

What is Nicodemus telling us today? On your

night – you are to go to meet Jesus. And at first it means to meet yourself and with all that is inside of you in your present situation: don't run away, don't pretend, don't blame others. Only then and only in this way will you be able to meet Jesus and discover that "the light was within me and I was looking for it around me" (St.

Augustine). And this light is God, rich in mercy, who brings us back to life with Christ (cf. Eph 2: 4-5). And with this light, we can move and act, even if there is darkness around us.

Courage is growing in the love of the truth. Nicodemus, decided in the first conversation with Jesus, entered the path of inner certainty that no one had taken away from him. Following his conscience, he met Jesus and, strengthened by this meeting, adapted his progress to the requirements of the Gospel.

Whoever seeks the truth and has the courage to think independently, sooner or later will meet a man who will help him find the right place in life. A conversation with him will fill him with a certainty whose foundation is God – the Truth in its pure form. The conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus is one of the fundamental themes of Church history, and truth-seeking people find assurance of their way of life.

Nicodemus is also the model by which we should build our Christian courage.

I offer my heartfelt thanks to you for all that you do for Sacred Heart Parish, for your sacrifice and support. I remember you in my everyday prayers, and I ask you to pray for me too, please. May God reward you with His blessing and graces!

With prayer, Fr. Jacek

A Few Words From Our Pastor…….

Drodzy Parafianie, Siostry i Bracia,

I oczywiście pokusa, aby winić wszystkich wokół siebie.

Niech Bóg wynagrodzi Wam swoim łaskami i błogosławieństwem!

Z modlitwą, Ks. Jacek

Ksiądz Andrzej Maślejak, jest księdzem Towarzystwa Chrystusowego. Obecnie jest proboszczem parafii Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej w Sterling Heights w stanie Michigan. Księdza Maślejaka wielu z Was zna z jego kapłańskiej posługi w parafii św.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the

world,

but that the world might be saved through him.

John 3:17

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Centuries ago, these Lenten days were a time of intense final preparation for the candidates for baptism. By now, they had already been numbered among the “elect” for Easter baptism, and were daily challenged to excel in prayer, in fasting, and in works of charity. As is true today, at a certain point in the weekly assembly for Eucharist, the nonbaptized were dismissed from the assembly for their own learning and prayer. While they might have had

impressions about the Eucharist, they had no direct experience. The rites of the church were secret and its worship places off-limits.

For the Easter Vigil, those to be baptized arrived very hungry from long fasting, and perhaps very apprehensive as to how initiation was to be accomplished. A long night of vigil and storytelling, a shimmering pool of baptism, the anointing with oil and clothing with white robes came as something of a surprise. At the end of a long, life-changing night of embrace by Christ and the community, as the eucharistic feast ended, a final surprise was brought forward. To address the deep hunger of the newly baptized, the church offered a bowl of milk and honey, sign of promises fulfilled, sign of community, prosperity, and peace, and yet another foretaste of heaven’s banquet.

Dear Parishioners,

Thank you for your generous support for our Split the Pot fundraising efforts. We are seeing more support of this effort as the weeks roll on. However, it is becoming more difficult every week to keep track of donations. Many of you are sending one check in and asking us to spread the Split the Pot donations over several future weeks’ drawings. Other times the instructions are not specific enough and we have to track down your intentions. Since the winner must give to Split the Pot and make a regular donation to qualify to win, it is imperative that we are able to determine this at the time of the drawing. We are also receiving entries through the post office, sometimes these are late entries that do not qualify because we have drawn the number before receiving the envelopes. . We are doing our best and are committed to being transparent.

These exceptions are causing problems, so, if at all possible please send in one envelope and one check (cash) specifically for Split the Pot in the week it is drawn.

Thank you for your continued generosity and understanding.

Emmett Williamson, Business Manager

Rules for Split the Pot:

1. Only registered parishioners are eligible to win this weekly drawing. If you are not registered with our parish, please come to our administrative office and we will be happy to register you into Sacred Heart Parish.

2. You must play to win. In addition to your regular weekly offering of at least five dollars, the cost of a split the pot entry for any given week’s drawing is also five dollars. (There are separate

envelopes for split the pot). All monies for split the pot will be set aside until there is a winner.

3. There may not be a winner every week. Each week, a name is drawn from our entire, (whether they participate in the split the pot or not) parishioner file. If the name drawn participated in that week’s split the pot drawing, they will win the split the pot prize.

4. If the name drawn from our entire parishioner file did not participate in split the pot that week, the money will be rolled over to increase the next week’s jackpot.

Thank you for your continued generosity! Emmett Williamson, Business Manager

PLEASE NOTE:

For those using the extra Split the Pot envelopes provided in back of church; please be sure to put your name and or Envelope ID number. These envelopes are not preprinted, so we have no idea who you are..

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

“More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.”

Prayer is one of the most powerful ministries available to us. Here at Sacred Heart we have (restarted) the ministry of prayer, the Ministry of Praise.

The Ministry of Praise is a spiritual ministry carried out by a group of persons who offer their

prayers, joys and sufferings to God for the wellbeing of others. Ministers of Praise pray for the sick, for the needs of our parish and the universal Church, and for special intentions. (We pray for our ministers on their birthdays, too!) Occasionally, prayers are requested according to the spirit of the liturgical season.

There are no meetings, dues or special prayers. Reflections and prayer requests are made regularly by means of a “praiseletter.” “Membership” is open to all adult parishioners, especially to the elderly, sick, disa- bled, homebound, or nursing home residents—any who wish to commit themselves to daily prayer.

Ministers of Praise have contributed much to the spiritual growth of our parish family. Their prayers and sup- port are a source of strength and blessings for all of us.

If you wish to join in this ministry of prayer and praise, please fill out the form below, and drop it off at church or mail it to the Ministry Center. Or email or call Elizabeth, and indicate your interest in joining this ministry.
