T h e b o o k consists o f studies and sketches w hich em erged over n early a q u arter of a centu
ry, and w hich are arranged in fo u r parts. T he first p art consists of tw o studies regarding th e m u
tual relations o f th e tw o great Polish R om antics: The Duels Between Słowacki and Mickiewicz and Mickiewicz’s First Judgment upon Słowacki’s Works. Q u ite unexpectedly w e ascertain th a t they challenged each o th er n o t o n ly to duels o f im provisations and texts, but also to at least tw o duels o f pistols (w hich fo rtu n ate ly never to o k place). W hereas M ickiew icz’s first judgm ent on Słowac- k i’s w o rk s seems to be m ost conventional and courteous ra th e r th an critical.
In th e second p a rt, Three Sketches o f „Balladyna”, the reader is presented w ith reflections on th e category o f false recognitions, the epic w ondrousness and finally on th e philo so p h y of hi
sto ry in th is dram a. T h e th ird p a rt (The Four Cardinal Points o f the Poetic World) is a study of th e p ro b lem o f th e addressee o f Separation, w hich is of great interest to historians of P olish li
terature.
T he fo u rth p art consists o f the follow ing studies: Slowacki’s Parable o f the Old-time Pole and The Old and the Future Poland in Slowacki’s Writings (Against a Background o f the Topos o f Re
membrance and Fame). T h ey concern th e period during w hich th e artist m ade use of his incre
dible talen t m o stly to o th e r ends th a n just literary ones. T o som e extent en passant, he used his excellent poetic tech n iq u e w hile looking fo r resolutions useful to th e cu rren t, full o f p atrio tism politics.

Le livre se com pose de quatre parties, em brassant les études et essais écrits au cours d ’u n qu
art de siècle, à peu près. La p rem ière partie c o n tien t deux travaux consacrés aux rap p o rts m u tuels en tre deux grands écrivains polonais rom antiques, à savoir: Les duels entre Słowacki et Mic
kiewicz et Le premier jugement de Mickiewicz sur 1‘oeuvre de Słowacki. N ous constatons, avec une certaine surprise, q u ’il s ’agissait là, pas seulem ent des duels aux im provisations, aux textes, mais aussi à deux, au moins, duels au pistolet, heureusem ent ratés. Q u an t à la prem ière opinion de Mic
kiewicz, concernant la création littéraire de Słowacki, elle paraît être bien conventionnelle et co
urtoise, mais pas critique.
D ans la deuxièm e partie intitulée Trois essais sur “Balladyna”, l ’auteur présente ses réflexions sur les catégories de fausses identifications, sur le m erveilleux de l’épopée et enfin celles sur la p h i
losophie de l’histoire, contenue dans ce dram e. L ’étude du p ro b lèm e du dédicataire de La Sépa
ration, ce qui fascine vraim ent les historiens de la littérature polonaise, constitue la troisièm e par
tie du livre (Les quatre coins du monde poétique).
La q u atrièm e p artie c o m p ren d les essais suivants: La parabole de Słowacki sur le Polonais d ’autrefois, aussi que La Pologne ancienne et future dans les écrits de Słowacki. (Sur le canevas du topos de la mémoire et de la gloire), essais étant relatifs à la période où Słow acki p ro fitait de ses aptitudes extraordinaires, su rto u t dans les buts n o n littéraires, et se servait, incidem m ent, en quel
que sorte, de son art poétique, indubitablem ent parfait, en recherchant les solutions utiles à la po
litique actuelle, im prégnée de patriotism e.
