EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED

If it ever crossed your mind that Jesus was somewhat lacking in a sense of humor, today’s Gospel should believe any such notion. Jesus’ story of the five wise and five foolish brides- maids is downright hilarious. The circumstances of the story were surely familiar to Jesus’ listeners, just as they are—if we think about it—to us. Weddings never, ever start on time. There’s always a delay. Buttons pop off at the last minute. Flowers wilt. Cars full of wedding guests get caught in traffic. Soloists contract laryngitis.

Brides or grooms or priests show up late! So the only reasonable way to approach a wedding is with a sense of humor, to realize that some- thing probably will go awry, and, when that happens, to smile about it.

Jesus tells this funny story to encourage us to be watchful, yes; to be ready, yes. But he doesn’t tell it to make us dour and som- ber. The heavy-hearted tremble, waver, lose sight of their place and purpose, and fall asleep. The lighthearted know that the unexpected will happen—is bound to happen—so they are awake in their place and ready in their purpose when it comes.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Wisdom is easily dis- cerned by those who love her (Wisdom 6:12-16).

Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63).

Second Reading — Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 [13-14]).

Gospel — Stay awake! You know neither the day nor the hour (Matthew 25:1-13).

ESPERAR LO INESPERADO

Si alguna vez se te pasó por la mente que a Jesús le faltaba un poco del sentido del humor, el Evangelio de hoy destierra esa no- ción. La parábola de Jesús sobre las cinco jóvenes precavidas y las cinco jóvenes descuidadas es sumamente chistosa. Las circunstancias de la parábola sin duda resultaban familiares a los que escuchaban a Jesús, como lo son para nosotros. Las bodas nunca, nunca comienzan a la hora. Siempre hay un retraso. Botones que se caen al último minu- to. Flores que se marchitan. Vehículos llenos de invitados atascados en el tráfico. Solistas que contraen laringitis. ¡Novias, novios o sacer- dotes que llegan tarde! Así que la única manera razonable de encarar una boda es con buen sentido del humor, conscientes de que algo va a salir mal, y, cuando eso suceda, sonreír.

Jesús cuenta esta historia chistosa para alentarnos a que seamos vigilantes, sí; a estar preparados, sí. Pero no nos la cuenta para que nos amarguemos y nos ensombrezcamos. Los apesadumbrados tiemblan, titubean, pierden de vista su lugar y propósito, y se quedan dormidos. Los festivos saben que sucederá lo inesperado –más que seguro —así que están despiertos en su puesto y listos para cumplir su propósito en el acto.

Primera lectura — La sabiduría la encuen- tran los que la buscan (Sabiduría 6:12-16).

Salmo — Mi alma está sedienta de ti, oh Se- ñor, mi Dios (Salmo 63 [62]).

OCZEKIWAĆ COŚ NIEOCZEKIWANEGO

Jeśli kiedykolwiek przyszł ci na myśl, że Jezusowi brakowało trochę poczucia humoru, dzisiejsza Ewangelia zmieni to pojęcie.

Przypowieść Jezusa o pięciu ostrożnych młodych kobietach i pięciu zaniedbanych młodych kobietach jest niezwykle zabawna.

Okoliczności przyzwalenia były z pewnością znane tym, którzy słuchali Jezusa, tak jak my. Wesela nigdy, nigdy nie zaczynają się na czas. Zawsze jest opóźnienie. Guziki, które odpadają w ostat- niej chwili. Kwiaty, które więdnieją. Pojazdy pełne gości utknęły w korku. Śpiewak, który chwycił zapalenie krtani. Narzeczona, narzeczony lub ksiądz, którzy się spóźniają! Więc jedynym rozsądnym sposobem, aby sprostać temu wszystkiemu jest pode- jście z dobrym poczuciem humoru, świadomość, że coś pójdzie nie tak, a kiedy to się stanie, uśmiech.

Jezus opowiada tę zabawną historię, aby zachęcić nas do czujności, tak; być przygotowanym, tak. Ale on nie mówi nam, abyśmy byli zasmuceni i zgnębieni. Nierostropne wahają się, tracą z oczu swoje miejsce i cel, i zasypiają. Roztropne wiedzą, że nieoczekiwane stanie się –z pewnością – więc nie śpią i są gotowe do realizacji swojego celu w każdym momencie swego życia.

In the tradition of the Catholic Church, the month of Novem- ber is set aside for the remembrance of All Souls. The names of loved ones who have preceded us in life and faith may be writ- ten in the BOOK OF THE NAMES OF THE DEAD at the front of the church. They will be remembered at all Masses during the month of November. Candles may be lit in their memory, too! May they Rest in Peace!

We would like to introduce a new opportunity for our Parishioners and St. John Bosco Church to Honor or

Memorialize your loved ones. For centuries Christians have lit candles in remembrance of loved ones. Those who have lost loved ones often ind it dif icult when it comes to the holidays, anniversaries or other special dates.

Whether for the living or deceased, you may commemorate a Baptism, Wedding, Anniversary, First Holy Communion, Con irmation, Thanksgiving or any Special Intention.

Located at the CHAPEL OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE special annual candles have been set aside as memorials.

This is a beautiful way to celebrate sentiments while beautifying the sacred space of our Shrine. These new shrines are very warm, inviting and unique. Each candle is made of real wax with electri ied illumination to ensure your Memorial Candle burns brightly all day and all night.

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUES : A small plaque displaying the name of your loved one or a “special intention” will be mounted before each candle. Plaques will remain for one year and may be renewed or rededicated for additional 12 month periods. The annual offering for each candle is $100 which will support the work and needs of St. John Bosco Church.

Honre y recuerde a sus seres queridos con una “vela memorial”.

Estas velas quedan prendidas en nuestra capilla de la Virgen de

Guadalupe por 24 horas, siete dı́as a la semana, durante todo un año.

Queremos ofrecer esta oportunidad a nuestros feligreses de San Juan Bosco para honrar y recordar a sus seres queridos. Durante siglos los cristianos han prendido velas en recuerdo de sus seres queridos Los que han perdido familiares se sienten con frecuencia tristes en especial cuando llega el aniversario de su fallecimiento, o bien, cuando se celebra una iesta en la familia y recuerdan sus ausencia. Estas velas se pueden prender por otras razones: Bautizos, bodas, aniversarios, primeras comuniones, con irmaciones y ocasiones semejantes.

Esta es una buena manera de mostrar nuestro afecto mientras que al mismo tiempo embellecemos el espacio sagrado de nuestra capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe. Estas velas son ı́ntimas y únicas. Cada una de ellas está

hecha de cera auténtica y está electri icada para conseguir que arda bien dı́a y noche.

PLACAS MEMORIALES: Cada vela llevara una plaquita con el nombre del ser querido o del evento que quiera recordar. La plaquita quedará allı́ durante un año y podrá renovar el memorial por un año más si gusta. La ofrenda anual es de $100.00 que se destinará al mantenimiento de nuestra iglesia de San Juan Bosco.
