U m das Engste w ir b t e r zuerst u n d e r fin d e t die H e i m a t ; b ra n d e t m it kü h n e n W e lle n em por der M ann, ru n d e t den w eitesten K re is, da g e w in n t er den bergenden S trand, trä u m t seinen stolzesten T ra u m , u n d d e r w e is t ih n ins R e i c h . verhangenen H im m e l ü b e r den tu rm h o h e n H äusern gereckt — blaß is t ih r Laub, blaß w ie die W angen des K indes, das frü h e schwankende S c h ritte ü b e r die Straßen h o fw ä rts setzt, und doch is t H e im a t die S tadt diesem K in d e . In die Ecken de r K e lle r, W in k e l der Böden spannen K indesaugen Gespinst u m Zwerge u n d H exen aus den M ärchen des A hns, u n d sein H erz glaubte daran, denn w a r der a lte n F ra u M ärch e n vom L a n d n ic h t W a h rh e it gew orden b eim ersten W eg aus d er Stadt?
K a rg is t das L a n d m it d e r Heide, den Föhren, d u rch Wiesen n u r schiebt sich der S trom , langsam, n ic h t schäumend am Felssturz vo n B urgen, aber, die See u n d die E b’ne spannen sich w e it, daß a u f W o lke n re n n e rn Gedanken m it verhängten Z ügeln endlos schweifen. A ch, die Ebene v e rlo c k te ins W eite das K in d , w ie e inst sie anzog die R itte r u n d B a u e rn und B ü rg e r aus Süden, aus Westen, deren Ä lte rs tä m m e sie einst
m als v e rfü h rte zu w andern, fo r t aus diesem Lande am U r - strom.
H e im a t u n d E rbe schufen zum J ü n g lin g das K in d ; den aber trie b es hinaus. Z u e n g . w a re n S tadt ih m u n d Gau, Bekanntes d ü n kte ih n m orsch u n d ve rb ra u ch t, e r suchte die F ü lle . Z w e i A rm e streckte er aus, u n d tausend boten sich
dar, n ic h t w u ß te er, w ie sie erg re ife n, die V ie lfa lt der M e n schen, d e r Lande u n d b lic k te v e rw u n d e rt sich u m — w a r ein F re m d e r er u n te r den Frem den? Da h ie lt sein O h r e r an des V olkes H erz u n d h ö rte aus dem gleichen B lu t den V a te rla u t, der gleichen M ärch e n W u rz e lg ru n d u m faß te ih n . E r hob sein A uge in die W ä ld e m a ch t, zu R ebenhügeln hob e r es empor, lie ß es vo n Bergen in die S c h lü fte sinken, sah auch die Wasser e w ig seinem M eer z u rin n e n ; u n d fü h lte seine H and nach S tein u n d Erde, so fü h lte sie den M u tte rb o d e n u n d das V a te rla n d . W ie w a r sein H erz so k le in , den ganzen R eich
tu m in sich aufzunehm en, w ie a rm sein H ir n v o r diesem A n s tu rm de r G esichte! U n d dennoch le rn te e r sich ganz beschei
den, le rn te in dem V ie le n n u r das E ine sehen, das G em ein
same — der Stolz e rfü llte ih n bis in die le tzte F ib e r, als er dies eine, dieses k le in e W o rt sich ganz gew onnen: deutsch!
D enn dies w a r D e u t s c h l a n d , w as de r J ü n g lin g fa n d , der aus d er H e im a t s c h ritt, u m W elten zu erobern. W ie e r sich selbst zum K a m p f g e gürtet sah, b e re it z u r Tat, die n ackte B ru s t dem kü h n e n W agnis fo rd e rn d preisgegeben, so standen die Ge
fä h rte n stolz u m ih n aus m ancher H e im a t u n d aus vie le m Stamm , doch eines, Deutsche, n u r aus B lu t u n d W ille n .
Sie w a re n aufgeboten f ü r das R eich! A u fr ie f sie eine S tim m e in der Nacht, vo m Lager, das d er S ch la f versäum te, w e il die Sehnsucht riesengroß nach R u h m n ic h t, nach der F re ih e it n u r v o r diesem B ette stand, aus S tern e n w e ite n r ie f die S tim m e sie, w a r h a rt u n d spröde w ie G ra n it u n d S tahl;
sie w a r B efehl. T ie f aus de r Nacht, d er V a te rla n d n u r Spuk, H e im a t n u r T ra u m bedeutete, t r a t groß d e r F ü h r e r h e r;
w ie Fackelglanz tru g in den H änden er den M orgen schon.
Den V ie le n b ra n n te in dgn A ugen g re ll das L ic h t, die H ä rte seiner S tim m e schmerzte sie; v o n Lasten, vo n de r D e m u t ste if u n d k ru m m die Nacken w aren, ohne Stolz, u n d beugten w id e rw illig n u r sich dem B efehl. P flic h t! hieß d er Same, der im M orgenglanz sta c h lic h t u n d unscheinbar de r Brache a n v e rtra u e t w a rd , doch w uchs m it grünen R eisern frü h lirig s - za u b e rh a ft aus d ü rre m K e rn die Tat. U n d w ie aus B lä tte rn sich die B lü te hebt, vo m grü n e n K e lc h im A n fa n g noch u m h ü llt, doch dann m ite in s des In n e n F a rb e n w u n d e r offen
barend, e n tfa lte te sich groß dem ganzen V o lk , das staunend k a u m b e g riff, w as ih m geschah, de r T ra u m .d e r Jünglinge, die sich de r F ü h re r rie f. E in je d e r w a rd de r Sehnsucht inne nach dem R eich; auch w e r aus seiner S ta d tg ru ft, seinem K a te n n ie den S c h ritt gewagt, w e r n u r des Staates trü b e W o h lfa h rt in dem V a te rla n d e sah, w a rd schm erzlich-süß sich der B e ru fu n g in n e in dem W o rt: das Reich.
